What is Opt-In?

Opt-in refers to the explicit action a user must take to indicate "I agree to receive messages" before you can send them SMS. In Toll-Free Verification, carriers place extreme importance on this, as it is the core defense against spam and consumer harassment.

If your website does not have a compliant Opt-in process, your verification application will be directly rejected.

Note: The copy and layout of your Opt-in page must be fully consistent with the "How will consumers be opting in" description in your verification application form. Any discrepancy may result in the review being returned.

Four Core Elements of Compliant Opt-In

According to US carrier and CTIA guidelines, a compliant Opt-in page or popup must include the following:

  1. Clear Business Name: Inform users who is sending the messages.
  2. Message Purpose & Frequency: Explain whether it's marketing offers or order notifications, and the approximate frequency (e.g., "up to 4 messages per month").
  3. Rate Disclaimer: Must include "Message and data rates may apply".
  4. Opt-Out & Help Instructions: Must inform users how to stop receiving messages, such as "Reply STOP to opt out" and "Reply HELP for help".

Shopify Setup Practical Guide

For cross-border sellers using Shopify, you can set up compliant Opt-in through the following methods:

1. Use Ecommerce Platform Built-in Templates

We recommend using official built-in compliance templates, like Shopify. These templates usually meet most requirements.

2. Custom Checkbox Settings (Critical Step)

If you add checkboxes manually, ensure:

Default StateThe checkbox must be unchecked by default.  Pre-checked boxes are strictly prohibited.

IndependenceSMS consent cannot be bundled with "Account Creation" or "Checkout". Users should be able to choose separately whether to receive SMS.

Copy Example☐ I agree to receive marketing SMS from [Brand Name]. Message frequency varies. Message and data rates may apply. Reply STOP to opt out. View our Privacy Policy and Terms of Service.

Tip: Add the URLs for your website's Privacy Policy and Terms of Service.

3. Avoid Common Compliance Traps

❌ Trap 1: Forcing phone number entry at checkout to complete an order.

❌ Trap 2: Using vague copy like "Subscribe to our newsletter" without mentioning SMS.

❌ Trap 3: Combining SMS consent with email subscription in one checkbox.

✅ Correct practice is to set separate checkboxes for SMS and email.

After setting up Opt-in, you need to ensure your website's legal policies are also compliant: Privacy Policy & Terms of Service Templates

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q1: Can the checkbox be pre-checked by default? +

Absolutely not. Carriers explicitly require Opt-in to be an active, voluntary action by the user. Pre-checked boxes are considered a "Dark Pattern" and will result in direct verification rejection.

Q2: Can I force phone number collection at checkout? +

No. Phone number collection must be optional. It is only compliant if users can complete their purchase without checking the consent box. Forced collection is considered "bundled consent" and violates CTIA Best Practices.

 Q3: What is Double Opt-in? +

Double Opt-in means that after a user submits their phone number on the website, they receive a confirmation SMS and must reply with a specific keyword (e.g., YES) to finalize consent. While TF Verification does not mandate Double Opt-in, it significantly improves compliance and delivery rates. If your business involves sensitive content or high-value marketing, this method is strongly recommended.
